Visual Arts Advising Hints—Spring 2008 Semester

VA 110 Drawing Fundamentals is appropriate for VA majors (requirement) and non-majors interested in learning how to create visual order from the world around them. Develops hand-eye coordination and perceptual skills. Variety of media explored. Rabe. MW 2:30 – 4:15

 

VA 120 Design Fundamentals is appropriate for majors (requirement for majors planning to continue in graphic design or design) and non-majors. Familiarizes students with the visual elements and furnishes experience in the use of the tools common to a visual arts profession. Genser. WF 9 – 10:50

 

VA 140 Basic Photography is appropriate for VA majors and non-majors. Learn camera control and darkroom techniques with opportunity for individual investigation and expression. Loischild. Lecture T 1 – 2:15.  Lab 1: R 2:30 – 4:15, OR Lab 2: R 4:30 – 6:15

 

VA 150 Introduction to Computer Graphics is appropriate for majors (interested in graphic design) and nonmajors. Overview of the use of the Mac computer in fields such as illustration, advertising layout, graphic design, photography. Explore design dynamics while getting an introduction to Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.  Genser. TR 4:30 – 6:15

 

VA 349 Special Topics in Photography is appropriate for VA majors and non-majors who wish to develop their skills beyond the basics. Varying foci dependent on students’ interests, with time for individual project development. Loischild. M 2:30 – 5:15 (pre-requisite: VA 140 Basic Photography or permission of instructor) May be repeated for credit.

 

VA 353 Digital Photography is appropriate for VA majors and non-majors. Explore digital imagery using Photoshop, scanners, digital cameras, and various output media. Genser. TR 2:30 – 3:45  (pre-requisite: VA 140 and VA 150 or permission of instructor) May be repeated for credit.

 

VA 490 Seminar in Aesthetics deals with advanced problems of visual communication with studio work, critique sessions, films, exhibitions, and discussion. Senior status only.  Genser. WF 11:30 – 12:45.

 

VA 496 Senior Thesis students in the Visual Arts major develop a body of work that will be exhibited at the end of the semester. A thesis proposal, an artist’s statement, and the installation of the exhibit in the Hess Gallery are part of the process. Senior status only. Rabe. W 10 – 11:15.

 

Students interested in Visual Arts are also encouraged to consider an exploratory internship. Many opportunities are available, including gallery and museum work.
