Safe Computing

While plugged into the network jack in your room, your computer participates in a community of machines within the Pine Manor College network and on the Internet. Just as in any community, you have a responsibility to protect yourself AND to protect your peers.

There are several important steps you must take to participate in the Pine Manor College computing network. Your failure to protect your computer and those of your peers may result in all residence halls loosing network access. This page describes these important steps and provides resources to help you complete them.

Have current and updated anti-virus software installed and running at all times

Pine Manor provides Symantec Antivirus at no charge to Pine Manor College students. Install it now!

Pine Manor College runs compete virus protection for all of its computers in classrooms, labs and offices. This software is checked and updated every day. That antivirus software you installed last year may not be protecting your computer if it is not receiving regular updates from the manufacturer. This usually requires a paid subscription at a small fee.

Action:

Check your antivirus software to be sure it is current and updating. If you are not sure if you have antivirus software or whether it is current, e-mail helpdesk@pmc.edu and we will help you check.

Be sure your computer is up to date with patches and fixes

Be sure your Windows operating system is up to date with the latest patches and security fixes. If you have Windows 98, Windows ME Windows XP or Windows NT, you can do this easily by visiting the following Web site:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Follow the instruction on the Web page. (If you are not sure what version of windows you have, the site will tell you.) The site will inspect your computer and tell you what patches and fixes it needs, and give you a chance to download and install them. (If you have never done, this you probably need a lot of fixes, so the first visit may take awhile.)

This service is free!
