MU 141 Singing I, for students who would like to learn to sing or to refine their singing skills, will be offered in the fall of 2008. Its continuation, MU 142 Singing II, will be offered in the spring of 2009. (Education students, please note that MU 141 and 142 provide more experience in the skills of reading music and sight-singing necessary for teacher certification.)
MU/ED 210 Music and Movement This course is offered for future teachers or for other students who want to work with children using music and movement. Students develop basic singing and recorder skills and learn singing and movement games appropriate for children. (Education students, please note that MU/ED Music and Movement provides more experience in the skills of reading music and sight-singing necessary for teacher certification.)
MU 241 Vocal Performance, for more experienced singers, prepares students for Pine Manor Camerata performances both on and off campus. The course may be repeated once for credit as a directed study since the materials and performances will be different each semester. Its continuation, MU 242 Vocal Performance II, will be offered in the spring of 2009. Prerequisites are MU 141 Singing I or MU 142 Singing II or permission of the instructor.
Opera con Brio is an adult education program offering courses in opera appreciation and opera history available to Pine Manor students as directed studies, however, only with permission of instructor Richard Beams. The fall offering will be MU 299 The Operas of Richard Wagner.
MU 143 through MU 444 Private Instruction in voice or an instrument is available for a fee of $550 per semester. (See pp. 117 in the Pine Manor Catalog for 2007-2009.) To arrange private instruction or for more information, contact Mahala Beams at 731-7040.

THEATER
The fall play and audition dates will be announced at the beginning of the fall semester. For information, contact Bob Owczarek at 617-731-7041.
TH 141 Designing and Building for the Theatre introduces students to scene design, set construction, painting, lighting, and stage management. Some evening commitments are required during the production week for the fall play in late October.
TH 211 Acting I is an introduction to acting appropriate for students with or without prior acting experience.

DANCE

For those who would like to join the Dance Ensemble in the fall, information about auditions will be posted early in the semester in the refectory. For information, you may also contact Sharon Montella at 617-732-7043 or Mahala Beams at 617-731-7040. New members are welcome to join this talented and active group who perform on and off campus through out the year.
Courses in dance technique for the fall of ’08 are DA 101 Modern Dance I, DA 111 Ballet I and DA 225 Jazz Dance I. The continuations of these technique classes, DA 102 Modern Dance II, DA 112 Ballet II and DA 226 Jazz Dance II, will be offered in the spring of 2009. Dance technique courses may be repeated for credit with the permission of the instructor.
DA 260 Dance in America is a 4-credit academic course exploring the origins, evolution, creators and great performers of uniquely American dance styles including modern, jazz, tap, dance in the musical, hip hop and ballet.
Students planning to minor in dance, please note that DA 260 Dance in America, DA 111 Ballet I and DA 112 Ballet II offered in 2008 –09 are courses required for dance minors. They will not be offered again until 2010-11.

COURSE LOAD: 2-CREDIT DANCE TECHNIQUE COURSES OR 2-CREDIT MUSIC COURSES
Students may take a 2-credit dance course or private instruction in music in addition to four regular academic courses without a course overload fee as long as the total number of credits does not exceed 19.5. However, there is a fee of $550 per semester for private instruction in voice or an instrument. (See pp.117 in the Pine Manor Catalog for 2007-2009.)
Students who wish a reduced academic load may consider 3 regular academic courses plus one 2-credit dance course or one 2-credit music course (or private instruction in an instrument or voice for an extra fee). If they wish to receive 16 credits by the end of the semester, but wish a reduced academic load, they might consider 3 academic courses plus two 2-credit dance courses or two 2-credit music courses or one 2-credit dance course and one 2-credit music course for a total of at least 16 credits.
Students who take a 2-credit course in private instruction in piano, voice, or an instrument must satisfactorily complete a second semester of private instruction in order to obtain credit for the first semester. (See p. 117 in the Pine Manor Catalog for 2007-2009)
A pair of related 2-credit courses shall be considered for degree requirements as a 4-credit unit upon completion of the second course. (See pp. 117 in the Pine Manor Catalog for 2007-2009)
