Relationship of the Performing Arts to the
Mission of the College
The Performing Arts are by their nature collaborative and foster the development of Inclusive Leadership and Social Responsibility. Our courses also encourage respect for diversity and an appreciation of women’s contributions to the Performing Arts in keeping with the College’s mission.
Goals
Pine Manor does not offer a B.A. in music, dance or theater. Therefore Performing Arts does not constitute a “program” equivalent to majors in other areas of the curriculum. Our goals for the Performing Arts are thus directed in two ways, to the general student population and to students with more specialized interests and skills who minor in music, dance or theater. For all students, the performing arts offer expressive and cultural enrichment. As well, students have the opportunity to develop valuable approaches to learning transferable to other academic and work related areas. They discover the value of discipline, commitment, inclusive group work and incremental progress through consistent effort.
For all students, we provide course work and performing experiences that develop appreciation of the performing arts and that relate particularly to the college’s learning outcomes of Critical thinking, Multicultural Perspectives, Inclusive Leadership, Social Responsibility, Application of Knowledge, and Creativity. Some courses also help develop effective written and oral communication; one course, MU 200 Making Music, particularly involves quantitative reasoning.
