The artist's book represents an important vehicle of expression for contemporary artists. This exhibition represents the work of two artists: Stephanie Mahan Stigliano and Mercedes Nunez. Although their work differs in terms of representation and abstraction, both artists share a deep concern for including the viewer in the tactile experience of their books. The act of moving elements or turning pages is central to the work of both artists. Moreover, the images and words in the artists’Äô books define personal journeys or self-reflections that are experienced by the viewer over time. It is, in fact, the temporal experience of the artist’Äôs book that is central to the expressiveness of this art form.
Twelve Pine manor students planned, researched, and mounted this exhibition. They are: Melissa Bustamante, Katherine Flach, Susan Flaherty, Rasheeda Givens, Katherine Greene, Tonimarie Kando Jessica Pettigrew, Laura Read, Jessie Smoger, Hannah Taytslin, Maria Vakhterova, and Alexandra Yearley. Throughout the fall 2002 semester these students worked on all aspects of the exhibition, including: the researching and writing of the catalog and wall text, publicity, the graphic design of the catalogue and various advertisements, the filming and producing the videotape of the exhibition, the design of the web page, and finally the challenging task of installation. This exhibition stands because of their hard work and dedication. Furthermore, their teamwork and willingness to take on new and challenging tasks stand as a testament to the inclusive leadership that is at the cornerstone of Pine Manor's mission. It has been a genuine pleasure to work with these talented students.

Many individuals have generously offered their time and assistance to the students in the Art Exhibition Seminar. On behalf of the entire class, I would like to thank, first and foremost, Stephanie Mahan Stigliano and Mercedes Nunez who provided help, advice, and encouragement throughout the planning and mounting of this exhibition. Their willingness to share their time and insight is very much appreciated. The class and I would also like to thank Professor Carole Rabe, Director of the Hess Gallery, and Chris Wirth, Hess Gallery Coordinator, for their advice and helpful suggestions. Their knowledge and expertise were great resources for the entire class. In addition, the class and I would like to thank the following individuals: Marilyn Bregoli, Sarah Cates, Professor Bob Evans, Richard Fallago, Donna Hartley, John Hatch, Alysa Johnson, Joan Kelley, Dorothy McDermott, Rich McGirr, Professor Bob Owczarek, Mandy Ranslow, Liam Roche, Elena Wethers Thompson, MaryJane Walsh, Professor Peter Woloschuk, and Sarah Woolf.
