Please remember to review the advising hints for the various majors when advising education students.
Also, be aware that there are Psychology Courses such as Child Development that are required of many licensing areas. Child Development is being offered this year on Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 with Professor White
Learning about Learning
Important courses that do not have the ED prefix…Any student interested in becoming a licensed teacher in any area should consider taking:
EN 100 Understanding the Structure of English
Tuesday and Thursday from 1-2:15

This course is required and crucial for any student who is considering becoming an educator. It will provide you with the necessary information to begin to prepare for the Communication and Literacy Skills Test that is required for every and any education licensing exam in the country. It is also a wonderful course for any student who wants to develop skills as a tutor or academic mentor in a K-12 school setting and/or after school program. Students, who are considering taking any graduate school qualifying exams, the GRE, the Miller’s, etc., will also find this course helpful. The course will support your review of grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing.
(EN 100 does not count towards an English major, nor fill any group requirement.)

Literature for Young Children

This course is for all students interested in working with children and adolescents, teaching, volunteering, tutoring, working in after school programs or literacy programs, working with young mothers, visual arts, art history, and/or genres of children’s literature may want to consider taking this course…it is required for students who wish to pursue an elementary, early childhood or middle school license.
ED 215 Curriculum Methods and
Materials for Early Childhood
Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 - 3:45

This course is for all students who are interested in working in an Early Care or Pre-School Settings. (Head Start, Nursery Schools, Kindergarten, etc.) Students interested in pursuing an Early Childhood Teaching License or an Early Learning and Care License are required to take this course.
ED 327 Curriculum Design: The
Massachusetts State Frameworks

This course is for all students who are interested in working with children, adolescents, and adults in traditional school settings, recreation and community settings, in the judicial system, in school counseling, in speech and language, with students for whom English is a Second Language. This course is required for ALL licensing areas.

This course is for students who are interested in working as an administrator in an early childhood, preschool, or day care setting.
ED 115 Working with Young
Children
Monday and Wednesday at 2:30-3:45

This course is for students who are interested in working in a Day Care setting, after-school programs, or who just enjoy working with and teaching young children. Students work in the Child Study Center 3 hours a week.
There is also a selection of Internship, Practicum, and Pre-Practicum opportunities for a variety of licensing areas. Please have individual students come speak to me, Sandy McElroy, with their specific questions.
