Elementary Licensure: English Major


A student will complete the standard requirements for the English major as described in the catalog, with the single exception that if she pursues elementary licensure, her student teaching (in spring of her senior year) would substitute for the English internship.

 To complete elementary licensure requirements with the English major a student must complete additional course work in educational studies.

 Educational Studies Courses for Elementary Licensure:
   
ED 102 - Foundations of Educatio
    ED 233 - Special Education, Assessment, and the Inclusionary Classroom
    ED 224 - Methods of Math and Science Instruction
    ED 205 - The Teaching and Assessment of Reading and Language Arts
    ED 327 - Curriculum: The Frameworks (pre-practicum hours)
    CS/ED 206 - Exploring Technology in the Classroom
    ED/EN 498 - Student Teaching Practicum and Seminar 

     Possible Electives for Educational Studies/Licensure:  
       
ED 355, Diagnostic and Remedial Reading, or an ESL course

Group and other Requirements:
In order to satisfy the substantive learning objectives for licensing, based on the MA Curriculum Frameworks, students seeking licensing with an English major should seek to fulfill their group requirements with the following courses.

    Recommended Courses for Students in English pursuing Elementary Education Licensure:
       
HI 111 - United States History I
        LS220 - Great Ideas in Science
        PS 111 - American Government
        PY 101 - Introduction to Psychology (Group 3 lab; required for PY 216)
        SO 310 - Sociology of the Family

     Required Courses for students in English pursuing Elementary Education Licensure:

        EN 100 -  Understanding the Structure of English
        ED/IDS 212 - Picture Books, Literature for Young Children (IDS)
        PY 216  - Child Development (PY 101 is a prerequisite)
        TH 251  - Theatre for Children   (Group 4)
