Class of 1948 Main Page
A Reception featuring the work of Nancy Brown Negley '48 will be held in the Hess Gallery, Friday, October 17th from 4:30 to 5:45 PM. Her colorful still life and landscape paintings as well as her paper collages will be on display. Besides her accomplishments as a professional artist, Nancy serves as Trustee, American Academy in Rome; Member, Georges Pompidou Art and Culture Foundation; Chair Emerita, Archives on American Art as well as serving on numerous other boards.
At the same time, another classmate, Diana Taylor Brown, will have an
exhibit in the Library (next to the Hess Gallery) with the display of the
privately printed books of letters written by her mother, Ellis Phinney
of West Medford, MA who became Ellis Phinney Taylor when she married her roommate's brother. The first volume covers her letters written to her mother and father from Berlin, Germany when she was a student there at a "finishing school", 1901-1910. The second volume are more letters written between 1915-1929. They cover the first World War, and letters of "belle epogue" sent from Europe and England. Included are her drawings and illustrations of the period. She had been a student at The Boston School of Fine Arts. Diana and her daughter compiled the two volumes with annotations.
Another volume "The Whaler and the Privateer", which Diana and her
husband, Colin, published together, will also be displayed. It is based
on her great great grandfather's Journal, written on a Nantucket whaling
ship which was captured by a British privateer that operated under the
French flag. Diana and Colin were able to find the Journal at the
American Antiquarian Society, written on the Privateer which captured the
Hero.
