Advising Tips
Biology and Chemistry:
(Tips for
Spring 2008)
1. First year students interested in biology who have not yet taken BI 101 should make taking BI 101 a priority in the spring semester.
2. Biology majors who have taken BI 101 should take BI 102 Evolution and Biodiversity in the Spring. Both courses are required for biology majors and it is best to take BI 102 immediately after taking BI 101.
3. The faculty of the Program strongly recommend that sophomores and juniors in the major elect BI 295 Exploratory Internship if their schedule permits.
4. BI 280 Bio-Ethics is an elective for both Biology majors and non-majors. It fills quickly.
5. BI 375 Human Genetics requires BI 206 Anatomy and Physiology II as a prerequisite.
6. There are two 300 level biology electives offered this semester: BI 345 Psychopharmacology and BI 380 Pathophysiology.
7. Marine Studies Consortium courses offered in the spring are: Biology of Fishes Coastal Zone Management Wetlands
Students must get permission from Dr. Gardner before registering for a Consortium course. (gardnerb@pmc.edu )
8. It is strongly recommended that biology majors enrolled in CH 110 Principles of Chemistry I take CH 120 Principles of Chemistry II immediately after Chem I.
9. It is strongly recommended that students currently enrolled in CH 200 elect CH 201 Organic Chemistry II.
10. CH 200 Organic Chemistry is a prerequisite for CH 300 Biochemistry.
11. CH 161 Life Sciences Chemistry is an introduction to concepts in general, organic and biological chemistry; it is a 5 credit one semester lab course for students planning to transfer to a nursing program. MA 102 Essential Algebra is the prerequisite. A student who plans to transfer to BC but does not may substitute CH 161 for CH 110 and continue to complete her BA at Pine Manor. She will be adequately prepared to take CH 200 Organic chemistry. This course is also recommended as an elective for any student interested in chemistry or looking for a Group III lab course.
12. BI 289 Biostatistics is required for students planning to transfer to Boston College in the nursing program. The prerequisite is MA 102 Essential Algebra.
13. CHC 100 Introduction to Community Healthcare is strongly recommended to students interested in allied health and medicine.
14. A separate sheet with advising hints for students planning to transfer to The Connell School of Nursing at Boston College has been sent to all students and faculty. Please contact Michele Talbot if you have questions. (talbotmi@pmc.edu )
15. Admission to NU 060 is limited to 10 students and is based on the student’s cumulative grade point average. Students who wish to enroll in NU 60 at Boston College should select four additional courses and should send an email to Professor Michele Talbot stating that they would like to take NU 060. Decisions will be made in December as soon as final term grades are submitted.
16. BI 223 Forensic Analysis is a new course; the pre-requisite is IDS 222 Murder She Wrote.
