Advising Tips
Biology and Chemistry:
(Tips for
Spring 2009)
Prospective Nursing Students:
Please note that any student interested in taking nursing courses at Boston College must come to an information session on EITHER
Wednesday, November 5 at 11:30 in Dane 211 OR
Wednesday, November 12 at 11:30 in Dane 211.
Advisors or students with questions should contact Michele Talbot using Pine Manor email. No student may enroll in the BC courses without Professor Talbot’s signed permission.
The nursing courses are taught at Boston College. They are:
NU 060 TR 3:00-4:15
NU 120 MW 10:00-12:00 with the lab NU 121 F 8:00-12:30
NU 060 is the prerequisite for NU 120 and NU 121.
Students will be admitted to NU 060 in late December after semester grades are submitted and the GPA is calculated. Both students and their advisor will be notified by email. Candidates should have a GPA of 3.2 or higher and have earned a grade of B- or better in College Composition. Students should register for four additional courses during pre-registration; students admitted to NU 060 will drop one of the four courses.
Please note changes in lab schedule which may affect Nursing Students
Two changes:
BI 101 02 lab has been changed from Friday at 10:00 to Thursday at 1:00 lecture time and time of Bi 101 01 lab remains the same.
BI 206 02 lab has been changed from Thursday at 1:00 to Friday at 10:00 lecture time and time of BI 206 01 lab remains the same.
1. First year students interested in biology who have not yet taken BI 101 should make taking BI 101 a priority in the spring semester.
2. Biology majors who have taken BI 101 should take BI 102 Evolution and Biodiversity in the Spring. BI 102 is required for biology majors and it is best to take BI 102 immediately after taking BI 101.
3. The faculty of the Program strongly recommends that sophomores and juniors in the major elect BI 295 Exploratory Internship if their schedule permits.
4. BI 225 Nutrition and BI 240 Biology of Women are elective courses for both Biology majors and non-majors. They fill quickly.
5. Marine Studies Consortium courses offered in the spring are:
Biology of Fishes
Coastal Zone Management
Biology of Whales
Students must get permission from Dr. Gardner before registering for a
Consortium course. (gardnerb@pmc.edu)
6. It is strongly recommended that biology majors enrolled in CH 110 Principles of Chemistry I take CH 120 Principles of Chemistry II immediately after Chem I.
7. CH 200 Organic Chemistry is a prerequisite for CH 300 Biochemistry.
8. BI 289 Biostatistics is required for students majoring in biology and for students planning to transfer to Boston College in the nursing program. The prerequisite is MA 102 Essential Algebra. Students should elect BI 289 as soon as they have completed the prerequisite and have room in their schedule preferably in their sophomore year.
9. Students planning to take Calculus in Fall 2009 must take MA 110 Precalculus in the spring semester.
10. BI 380 Pathophysiology is required for transfer to the nursing program at Boston College; Anatomy and Physiology I and II are prerequisites. Pathophysiology is also highly recommended as a elective for junior and senior biology majors.
11. A separate sheet with advising hints for students planning to transfer to The School of Nursing At Boston College has been sent to all students and faculty. Please contact Michele Talbot if you have questions. (talbotmi@pmc.edu)
