Bridgewater State Bears Roll Past Pine Manor, 76-49

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. –
Senior forward Catie Furtado (Taunton, MA) made Bridgewater State College women’s basketball history as she poured in a school record 35 points to lead the host Bears to a 76-49 victory over Pine Manor College, this afternoon at the Adrian Tinsley Center in Bridgewater. With the win, the Bears improve to 3-3. The loss drops the Gators to 1-5.The Bears old single-game scoring mark of 32 points was originally set by Kim Mooney in 1991 versus Plymouth State and tied by Erin Hurley in 1999 against Fitchburg.
Furtado, who shot 17 for 24 from the floor, also added 17 rebounds and 7 steals as she posted her third consecutive double-double. Seven of her team-high 17 boards came off the offensive glass. Furtado poured in 22 points in the second half alone as the Bears built up a lead of as many as 29 points.
Bridgewater took a 35-24 advantage into the locker room and came out with an 8-0 run to start the second half. Pine Manor then responded with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 10 points at 43-33. The Bears still led by 10 points, 50-40, when they went on a 16-2 run to put the game well out of reach.
Bridgewater’s defense set the tone, as the Bears forced 30 turnovers and limited the Gators to 31% shooting, including just 1 of 10 from beyond the arc. The 49 points was the lowest amount that the Bears have allowed this season.
Junior guard Melissa Murphy (Rockland, MA) also finished in double figures as she netted 14 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Junior guard Caitlin Feeney (Providence, RI) chipped in with 8 points, 8 assists and 5 steals.
Sophomore forward Amanda Dennis (Haverhill, MA) played very well for Pine Manor scoring 23 points and pulling down 17 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Bears are back on the court again on Tuesday at 7 as they travel to UMass Dartmouth to take on the Corsairs. Pine Manor College will play tomorrow at Emerson at 1.
