Brennen announces changes in hoops, softball, volleyball staff

Three new coaches, SID, on board for 2008

Chestnut Hill, MA -- Athletic director Erin Brennen Monday named Darryl Simpson the new Pine Manor basketball coach, Martha Deusser the new softball coach and Lyndsey Stults the school’s new volleyball coach. Additionally, Ryan McCarthy has joined the Gators staff as its inaugural sports information director.

“We’re excited about the new direction that the department is taking and look forward to having another successful year,” said Brennan.

Simpson comes to Chestnut Hill without leaving the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, having spent the last two seasons on Tony Price’s bench at Simmons College.  He brings to Pine Manor an acquaintance with conference opponents, an awareness of the woman’s institution and familiarity on the recruiting trail.  At Simmons, which is also a woman’s college, he was responsible for practice planning, recruiting and working primarily with the team’s guards.

Prior to Simmons, Simpson was the girls’ varsity head coach at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, MA, where he left as the most successful coach in school history, compiling a 54-27 (.667) record from 2001 to 2006.  From 2004 to 2006, he was also the head coach with the Cambridge-based Metro Heat AAU program.

He replaces Bill Boffi, who, after 13 years as Gators coach, has become the College’s dean for student retention.

Deusser aided in constructing a program that achieved immense success at Holyoke Community College, where she was promoted to head softball coach in 2004 after two seasons as an assistant. Her tenure produced back-to-back New England Region XI titles and two All-Americans in one of the most successful eras in program history.

Deusser, who will also serve as Pine Manor’s recruiting coordinator, concluded her playing career in 2002 after four years at Elms College, leading the Blazers as team captain her final two seasons.  In 2001 and 2002, she was named to the North Atlantic Conference All-Tournament Team.  In 2005, 2006 and 2008, Deusser was the freshman, varsity assistant and junior varsity coach at Barnstable (MA) High School.

She takes over for Erin Van Nostrand, who led the Gators to a 31-11 record and first place finish in GNAC regular season action in 2007.

Stults coached from 2005 to 2007 as a graduate assistant at Division III Trinity College in Hartford, CT.  She was responsible for planning and running practices, game management, scouting and recruiting for the Bantams.  Trinity compiled a combined 33-18 (.647) record in her two seasons, with her 2006 team going 16-7.

From 2000 to 2004, Stults played for the University of New Hampshire’s Division I women’s volleyball team.  In addition to her role as a scholar-athlete, Stults displayed her leadership skills as vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, graduating with honors.

McCarthy, who joined the Gators staff last month, comes to Pine Manor from Medaille College in Buffalo, NY.  There he served as graduate assistant for sports information in 2007 and 2008, assisting in the production of game day documents and statistical compilation for the Mavericks 13 varsity teams.  In 2007 and 2008, he also worked at the University at Buffalo Office of Athlete Academic Services as a learning strategist, mentoring the academic progress of the Bulls student-athletes.

He has also taken on roles as a graduate intern for sports information at Buffalo State College and an athletic communications intern at St. Bonaventure University.

Pine Manor College sponsors seven NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic teams and is a member of the 13-team Great Northeast Athletic Conference.  The Gators fall athletic season begins on Saturday, September 6, as the soccer team travels to Mitchell and volleyball visits Babson.
