Inclusive Leadership
The ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a group, assuming leadership when appropriate and facilitating its appropriate assumption in others.
The concept of Inclusive Leadership involves a set of skills and values that are different from those associated with traditional views of leadership. Inclusive leadership emphasizes the importance of individuals working together to achieve common goals, recognizing the unique contributions that each makes to the whole.
You should select an artifact that you believe to be representative of a group experience that involves working with others on the development of specific goals and the development of strategies to achieve these goals. Your artifact should be accompanied by a reflective essay which indicates your understanding of group process and leadership style. You should try to show an awareness of your own and other’s contributions to the group’s success, and how you may apply what you have learned from the experience in future settings. The following are some questions you may keep in mind while creating this reflection:
- Were these groups successful? How would you measure success? Would each member of the group agree with your evaluation of the group’s success?
- Was everyone able to express her views to the group? Whose voices were being heard?
- What obstacles might have limited the contributions of some members of the group? What efforts were, or could have been, taken by you or another member of the group to overcome such obstacles?
- In what ways does diversity (roles, abilities, interest, culture) play a role in group functioning?
- Have you seen anyone be particularly inclusive (open to ideas from others, welcoming of other points of view) in the group(s) that you have been a part of?
- Have you seen anyone be particularly hierarchical in the group(s) that you have been a part of? What was positive/negative about that style?
- How would you complete this statement: “In my next group experience, I would like to be more (or less) ________”
- How has your understanding of the nature of leadership changed since becoming a member of the Pine Manor community?
- What have you learned at PMC about effective team work and inclusive leadership that you will be able to apply in future community and workplace situations?
